Assistant Director, Baruch College Writing Center

POSITION AVAILABLE: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, WRITING CENTER

The Writing Center at Baruch College provides support for student writers to improve their writing and English language skills and to become independent, confident, and versatile writers. Baruch’s 15,500 students speak 110 languages and come from 160 countries making us the most ethnically diverse college in the United States. Over the past five years, Baruch’s Writing Center has grown to become a cornerstone of support for the teaching of written communication and new media at the College. As part of our expansion, we invite applications for the position of Assistant Director, Writing Center.

Assisting the Writing Center Director, the Assistant Director’s responsibilities fall into two key areas:

I. Operations · Hire, train, and supervise writing consultants · Hire, train, and supervise front desk staff · Manage the online scheduling system · Maintain our web site, blog, and wiki · Coordinate staff and event schedules · Supervise eTutoring · Generate reports · Oversee budget II. Development · Participate in the Writing Center’s program design · Provide professional development for consultants · Develop and implement workshops and pilot projects · Collaborate with academic departments and units in WAC/WID initiatives · Conduct faculty workshops · Prepare and present Writing Center initiatives and practices for the College community · Prepare and implement assessment measures

Salary: $35.21/hour, 35 hours/week, 40 weeks/year. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

Start date: August 1, 2008.

Qualifications: M.A. (English, Rhetoric and Composition, TESOL, Education, or related field preferred) with knowledge of Writing Center, composition, and TESOL theories and pedagogies; experience teaching at the college level and in training and staff development; knowledge of word processing programs, databases, and spreadsheets; excellent administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
