Call for Papers

The Canadian Journal for Studies in Discourse and Writing

Guest editor: Tracy Whalen, University of Winnipeg

It has been more than twenty years since the writing program began at the University of Winnipeg, a program that developed into the Centre for Academic Writing and most recently into the first Canadian department of Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications. This milestone has prompted a special issue of The Canadian Journal for Studies in Discourse and Writing about the "coming of age" of programs like that at The University of Winnipeg. Invited are papers about the history, dynamics, and development of writing programs generally. Other relevant topics that pertain to the scholarship of teaching and writing include, but would certainly not be limited to, the following:

* the history of practice in writing programs

* rhetoric, writing, and social change

* the future of graduate work in rhetoric, writing, and communications

* the place of the first year writing course in composition

* innovations in writing centre research and practice

* the role of rhetoric in writing instruction

* the place of the writing program in the larger institution and in the larger community

* technologies and popular culturre in writing instruction

* empowerment-centred teaching, access, and academic excellence

* quality instruction/department development in an age of financial constriction.

Papers that engage with these topics or any other that seems to lend cohesion or enrichment to this general theme are welcomed. Papers can be submitted electronically to Tracy Whalen, guest editor, at t.whalen@uwinnipeg.ca. The deadline for submissions is 1 March 2010. The Canadian Journal for Studies in Discourse and Writing is a bilingual journal and all submissions will be sent out for peer review. Any questions can be directed to the guest editor:
