The Department of Writing and Linguistics in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences invites nominations and applications for the position of Lecturer. Georgia Southern University ( www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution of the University System of Georgia and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is one of Georgia’s premier universities. A residential university serving more than 19,000 students in fall 2009, Georgia Southern is recognized for providing all of the benefits of a major university with the feeling of a much smaller college. Founded in 1906, the University offers more than 100 campus-based and online degree programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels through eight colleges. The nearly 700 acre park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a classic Main Street community near historic Savannah and Hilton Head Island.
Within this setting, the Department of Writing and Linguistics, the only freestanding department of its kind in Georgia, comprises the areas of creative writing, linguistics, professional and technical writing, and writing studies. The Department offers the Bachelor of Arts in Writing and Linguistics and is responsible for the delivery of first-year writing (English 1101 and English 1102). The Department is home to the University Writing Center and the Georgia Southern Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project. The Department hosts the annual Student Success in Writing Conference and co-hosts the Georgia Conference on Information Literacy. In 2012, the Department will host the international Writing Across the Curriculum Conference, and in 2013 will host the annual conference of the Council of Writing Program Administrators. The Department is also involved in the Georgia Poetry Circuit, the Georgia Literary Festival, and the National Day on Writing. The ideal candidate will contribute to the teaching of first-year writing along with other department programs and activities.
Position Description. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Writing and Linguistics, the Lecturer will teach courses in the department’s Bachelor of Arts in Writing and Linguistics program, with a primary assignment in first-year writing, participate in departmental service, and engage in professional development activities. This position requires teaching responsibility and at least a Master’s degree suited to the Department of Writing and Linguistics. The position is a 9-month non-tenure track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Non-tenure track lecturer positions are renewable on an annual basis.

- Experience teaching first-year writing
- Experience teaching with technology
- Evidence of excellence in teaching
- Terminal degree (PhD or MFA) suited to the Department of Writing and Linguistics by August 1, 2011
- Graduate coursework in Rhetoric and Composition
- Three years of college teaching experience
- Experience working with diverse student populations
- Experience developing or teaching online writing courses
- Evidence of scholarly potential
