Duke University Writing Studio Director (Review begins November 1, 2014)
The Thompson Writing Program at Duke University seeks an Assistant Professor of Practice in Writing Studies or related discipline to direct the Writing Studio, the TWP’s writing center. The Director of the Writing Studio is part of a leadership team dedicated to the teaching of first-year academic writing, support for faculty teaching with writing at all levels of the curriculum and for undergraduate writers throughout their careers at Duke. The Professor of the Practice track at Duke is a regular rank faculty track parallel to the tenure track, and affords the possibility for reappointment and promotion to the Associate and Full Professor of the Practice ranks. The position will come with an initial four-year contract, which will be renewable, subject to review, with a start date of July 1, 2015.
The Director of the Writing Studio will be responsible for managing the Writing Studio, a center staffed by approximately 70 undergraduate, graduate and adjunct tutors, all in a free-standing program independent of other departments. Responsibilities include training of both graduate and undergraduate student tutors, supervising an assistant director, leading Studio assessment activities, overseeing tutor scheduling, developing online and print resources for faculty and students, and leading campus workshops related to student writing. The Director will also contribute to strategic planning for the future development of the Studio, collaborate with Duke faculty on curricular initiatives supporting writing across Duke, and sit on college and university committees as appropriate. The Director will teach one course per semester—including Writing 101 and courses related to writing pedagogy. This individual will join a team of four other Assistant and Associate Professors of the Practice and a faculty of 27 post-doctoral teaching fellows.
• PhD in writing studies or related field, with active research agenda in an area related to writing center theory and practice
• 3 years experience with college-level writing instruction as well as writing center administration.
• Experience with program assessment
• Experience with supporting the writing needs of English Language Learners
• Experience with mentoring or providing professional development for new and returning tutors
· Experience in tutoring or administration of digital pedagogy and support of instruction of oral communication.
