The Department of English at the University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks an enthusiastic and collaborative colleague for a full-time, tenure-track Associate Professorship as Director of the First Year Writing Program.
The FYWP enrolls over 2000 students every semester in its College Writing I and II sequence and related courses. All College Writing courses are capped at 19 students or fewer. The Director will be assisted by the FYWP Coordinator (a staff position already in place) and will work closely with the department's 10 full-time FYWP faculty to carry out program policies and initiatives, and to provide professional development for faculty. Teaching in the program is carried out by a significant number of part-time faculty along with the FYWP full-time faculty.
The Director will work closely with the Department Chair and will also collaborate with the Director of the newly-established Writing Center.
The ideal candidate will be an effective communicator and collaborator who will provide strong leadership within the program and effective program advocacy within the broader university community. We seek a candidate who has experience in successfully developing and carrying out new initiatives within a writing program and/or curriculum. The successful candidate will also be expected to pursue an active publishing agenda in his or her field.
In addition to this administrative work, the Director will teach one course each semester. The candidate will teach first year writing courses and upper-level course offerings in our thriving English major which enrolls over 400 majors in four concentrations. Teaching areas may include Composition and Rhetoric, Linguistics, ESL, Technical Writing, or Professional Writing. The position will also entail some administrative obligations during the summer months (placement, communicating with Admissions and Registrar offices) and in these obligations the Director will be assisted by the Coordinator.
