DIRECTOR OF WRITING CENTER
California State University, Los Angeles, invites applications for the above Administrator II position. We are seeking a full-time Director of Writing Across the Curriculum and the Writing Center who would be responsible for supervising the Writing Center and for taking the lead in promoting effective instruction across the campus and in expanding the incorporation of writing across the curriculum and writing in the disciplines.
The University: California State University, Los Angeles, under the leadership of newly appointed President, William A. Covino, is one of 23 campuses of the California State University system. Founded in 1947, the University is in the city of Los Angeles, adjacent to the San Gabriel Valley, and has more than 22,000 students who reflect the rich ethnic diversity of the area.
The Position: Reporting to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, the Director supervises the Writing Center and works with departments and the Center for Effective Teaching and Learning to initiate and supervise faculty development with regard to promoting effective writing instruction. The Director provides key leadership and supervision for the implementation of the Early Start composition course and the other options offered by the campus for addressing the needs of students with regard to remedial composition; identifies the needs for writing instruction in GE courses and all departments; develops strategies for providing instruction and supervises the implementation of those pedagogical strategies; assists the department of English in training and supervising instructors in composition for the Early Start program for students who are not college ready; incorporates best practices with respect to assisting students in completing college composition, including tutoring, directed self-placement (DSP), and stretch composition; oversees the current Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE) and works to explore other options for demonstrating completion of the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR); and supervises the composition instruction in the General Education program and provides leadership in the assessment of the effectiveness of the writing instruction in all General Education courses.
Required Qualifications and Experience: An earned doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in English, Rhetoric, Composition or a related field and three years experience in an administrative capacity in a writing program. Familiarity with writing instruction in General Education. Current theory and best practices with regard to developmental writing instruction. Demonstrated ability and/or interest in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. Fingerprinting will be taken and checked by the California Department of Justice and FBI.
Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. A comprehensive benefits package is provided.
Appointment: The Administrator II appointment will be made under the guidelines for management and supervisory employees of the California State University. All rights and benefits associated with this appointment are governed by the Management Personnel Plan.
