The Department of Rhetoric and Writing at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock invites applications for a Professor and Department Chair position (R99367) to begin July 1, 2016. We seek a chair with demonstrated effective leadership and/or administrative experience and an active research agenda and pedagogical interests in one or more of the following: Rhetoric and composition, non-fiction, professional and technical writing, editing, or related areas. We seek candidates who will lead the department in support of the university and college missions and enact the mission of the department to develop written and rhetorical literacy among its majors, minors, UALR students, and the larger communities of which it is a part.

The Department of Rhetoric and Writing, a stand-alone writing department, houses the Composition program, the University Writing Center, and the Little Rock Writing Project. The department offers a BA, a Minor, and an MA in Professional and Technical Writing. These degrees include courses in rhetoric, editing, creative nonfiction, and technical writing. Job Duties and Responsibilities

·         Oversee undergraduate and graduate programs

·         Oversee the First Year Composition program, the University Writing Center, and the Little Rock Writing Project

·         Be responsible for departmental level administration and coordination

·         Supervise department staff 

·         Provide budget oversight

·         Oversee faculty recruitment and retention

·         Administer annual faculty and staff evaluations

·         Oversee departmental promotion and tenure processes 

·         Mentor faculty

·         Promote student success

·         Teach in traditional and online formats

·         Represent the department within the college, university, and with outside community

·         Serve on the Dean’s leadership team

·         Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·         Ability to provide academic leadership to the department

·         Experience and/or desire to engage in professional service activities within the community

·         A proven record of building positive student, colleague, and community relationships

·         Ongoing record of scholarly research and engagement in the discipline

Required Education and/or Experience:

Doctoral degree in Rhetoric and Composition, Technical Writing, Writing Studies, English or closely related field with three years of demonstrated, effective academic leadership and/or higher education administrative experience; and an established record of teaching and scholarship equivalent to Professor rank at UALR with a demonstrated commitment to working across disciplines.
