Asst/Assoc Professor of English and Director of Core Writing at Fairfield University
Fairfield University invites applications for a tenure-track Advanced Assistant or Associate Professor of English and Director of Core Writing (WPA). Based in the Department of English, the Director is expected to play an exciting role in the development and implementation of a Writing Across the Curriculum Program, pending faculty approval of a proposed general education curriculum revision. The Director will oversee the English Department’s Core writing courses, and work in partnership with the University’s Center for Academic Excellence on faculty development and curricular initiatives consistent with the University’s strategic academic plan. Salary is dependent on qualifications and professional experience. The Director will have a reduced teaching load and the aid of an Assistant Director of Core Writing.
Responsibilities -- Within the English Department, the Director will:
- teach in the first-year composition sequence and courses in area of specialization;
- maintain an active research agenda on writing program administration or related area;
- lead faculty development in writing;
- guide assessment of Core Writing learning objectives;
- contribute to the integration of educational technology in Core writing courses;
- hire, train, supervise, and evaluate part-time faculty in Core Writing courses;
- schedule 50+ sections of Core Writing courses each semester.
In addition, the Director will:
- collaborate with the Director of the Writing Center to support Core writing courses;coordinate with the Library on information literacy initiatives.
- a Ph.D. in rhetoric, composition, or related area;
- administrative experience with writing programs;
- a research agenda on writing program administration, rhetoric, or related field;
- ability to work with full-and part-time faculty to create effective writing courses and improve writing pedagogy;
- knowledge of assessment of both learning objectives and writing programs;
- a record of excellence in teaching writing courses;
- a commitment to innovation and demonstrated excellence in using technology in the classroom.
In addition, the ideal candidate will have:
- the ability to work with colleagues across the University to develop and sustain a Writing Across the Curriculum program;
- additional research interests in one or more of the following areas: service learning and community-based research; multilingual learners; writing in the disciplines (WID); or related area

The WPA will be part of a distinguished faculty of English Department writing instructors who teach students in a wide variety of writing settings.
The three Writing Sequences in the English Department provide a framework for students to use their department electives to deepen their skill and experience with Creative Writing, Journalism and Professional Writing.
The department supports a low residency Master’s of Fine Arts degree in creative writing. During semiannual residencies on Enders Island in Mystic, Connecticut, the highly rigorous program allows students to learn from a faculty made of nationally recognized writers.
The English Department has one of the largest internship programs of any department in the University. Each semester, up to 30 students use their classroom writing skills in the field and reflect on the experience.

The Connecticut Writing Project/Fairfield, an affiliate of the National Writing Project, is dedicated to improving K-12 students' writing abilities by strengthening the teaching and learning of writing, providing professional development programs for classroom teachers, and expanding the professional roles of teachers. Dogwood (http://Dogwoodliterary.com), a nationally known literary magazine, gives students a chance to work as assistant editors, evaluating hundreds of manuscripts. The Mirror (http://Fairfieldmirror.com), an award-winning news organization, provides an avenue for students to sharpen their journalistic skills in preparing stories for a variety of mediums: online, traditional print, podcasts and broadcasts. Students often take Individual Writing Project courses with faculty to work 1:1 in these settings.
