Director of the Writing Center at Le Moyne College

Le Moyne College invites applications for the Director of the Writing Center. This is a 12-month administrative position reporting to the Dean of Assessment and Planning and serving at the pleasure of the Provost. Responsible for all operations of the Writing Center, the Director should be a dynamic individual who possesses prior experience as a writing tutor and/or instructor, strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community members. At a minimum, the Director must possess a Master’s degree in English or an appropriate field.

The qualified candidate will possess an understanding of a liberal arts education in the Jesuit tradition, as well as the ability to work with a growing population of graduate students in such areas as business administration, information systems, arts administration, occupational therapy, nursing, and physician assistant studies. The Director will promote and enhance the services provided by the Writing Center, supervise peer tutors, support faculty needs to ensure student success, and contribute to the growth of a vibrant campus-wide writing culture.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Writing Center (WC)
  • Develop and implement WC programming and services, including workshops and programs that meet the needs of students and faculty
  • Promote and publicize services provided by the WC to students and faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences, Madden School of Business, and Purcell School of Professional Studies
  • Teach up to two courses per academic year or provide equivalent hours in 1:1 writing tutoring
  • Hire, schedule, and supervise peer writing tutors, working in collaboration with the Director of the First-Year Writing Program and the Student Success Center
  • Hire, train, and supervise professional writing tutor(s)
  • Work with Director of the First-Year Writing Program to provide support for WRT 100 and 101, including developing online modules and holding clinics that reinforce key writing competencies
  • Work with faculty in Core Writing Instructional courses (e.g., ENG 210, PHL 110) to provide support for writing in the Core, including developing online modules and holding clinics that reinforce key writing competencies
  • Develop and implement services that support business and professional writing practices for students and faculty in the Madden School and the Purcell School
  • Develop and implement services for multilingual student writers
  • Develop and implement assessment methods to measure WC use, effectiveness, and quality
  • Coordinate with relevant personnel (e.g., Director of Creative Writing) to host relevant events (such as readings, craft talks, etc.) in the combined Quantitative Reasoning Center / Writing Center
  • Ensure that technology and equipment used by the WC is current and maintained
  • Perform other tasks related to the mission of the WC as assigned by the Provost and/or Dean of Assessment and Planning

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Writing Studies, English, or another relevant field
  • Experience providing 1:1 writing tutoring
  • Experience teaching writing at the college level
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Writing Studies, Writing Center Studies, English, or another relevant field
  • A background in writing pedagogy
  • Experience using technology in the delivery of writing support services and pedagogical development
  • Experience overseeing and mentoring student employees / peer tutors
  • Experience working with multilingual student writers, graduate students, and part-time and adult students
  • Experience assessing effectiveness of academic support services and student learning
