For a SPECIAL ISSUE of OPEN WORDS: ACCESS And ENGLISH STUDIES
Devoted to The Teaching, Theorizing, and Research of College-Level Reading and Literacy
Open Words: Access and English Studies is a journal dedicated to publishing articles focusing on political, professional, and pedagogical issues related to teaching composition, reading, ESL, creative writing, and literature to open admissions and non-mainstream student populations. We will be devoting issue 2.2 (spring, 2008) to the multiple disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to reading and literacy. We invite manuscripts from educational psychologists, K-12 reading researchers, compositionists, literacy researchers, and literary theorists to explore ways in which we could improve our college students’ attitude toward reading, their comprehension of texts, and their engagement with texts. We are specifically looking for original classroom research on college campuses; an historical summary of reading research and its applicability to open admissions or otherwise at-risk college learners; conversations that go beyond the deficit model of reading instruction; the relationships between multimodal literacies and new media; ways that people put reading to use in their daily lives; and other related topics. If you have any questions, please contact William Thelin at wthelin@uakron.edu.
