The Department of English at Illinois State University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department with a starting date of July 1, 2008. Applicants should have a terminal degree in a relevant field and a distinguished record of scholarly research. Applicants also should have demonstrated administrative competencies and the interpersonal skills necessary to provide innovative leadership to foster an academic environment conducive to quality education and scholarship. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to shared academic governance and to diversity, broadly defined.

The Department of English at Illinois State University offers integrated English Studies programs at the doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate levels featuring an internationally recognized faculty doing work in children’s literature, creative writing, critical theory, comparative literature, English education, English Studies pedagogies, language arts, linguistics, literary and cultural studies, literary publishing, rhetoric and composition, technical communication, technology in English studies, and TESOL. Further, the Department has a strong mission to prepare teachers at the secondary level and to assist in the preparation of teachers at the elementary level. The department also houses a nationally recognized writing program, a publications unit, and an internationally recognized doctoral program. We welcome opportunities to diversify our faculty.
