The Director of First Year Writing provides leadership for curricular and co-curricular initiatives that help students successfully transition to the College through support, guidance, and community. The aim is for students to gain the skills, knowledge of resources, and sense of community that will lead to academic success. The College’s First Year Program has two curricular components: a two-semester writing sequence, for which the director has direct responsibility, and a one-semester first-year seminar, directed by a faculty lead. In collaboration with faculty, advising, and student support staff, the Director shapes and leads co-curricular components that help ensure students’ success in the first year.
The Director of First Year Writing provides leadership in defining, coordinating, and assessing first year writing. The Director will lead discussions and workshops with the faculty to evaluate objectives and learning outcomes of the first year courses and align these with the College’s seminar pedagogy and mission. The Director works with the faculty in designing and developing syllabi to meet program objectives and outcomes, and assesses student learning. Administratively, the Director is responsible for hiring PT faculty who teach in the first-year writing program, supporting faculty in the development of courses, and conducting class observations. The Director collaborates closely with the faculty lead of the first-year seminar and works closely with faculty and staff across the university to assess the non-academic needs of the student population and develop ways to build community through the First Year Program.
This is a 10 month (mid Aug-mid June paid over 12 months) proportional full-time administrative appointment with annual teaching responsibilities. The Director will teach the equivalent of three courses a year including a mix of First Year Seminar and First Year Writing. The position comes with $2,200 to support creative and scholarly endeavors. The Director reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Planning.
Lang’s philosophy on first year writing courses include an emphasis on student voice(s), a commitment to the differences in student voices, and building writing confidence in our students. We are also committed to having a diversity of types of writers teaching in our program and diversity in our faculty. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable in best practices in first-year writing instruction and provide vision for developing courses and programming that support the goals of First Year Writing, including lifting up the profile and visibility of the program. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of experience teaching first-year writing courses, experience teaching undergraduate first-year seminars, and experience with program development, management and assessment. Demonstrated success in teaching and mentoring students is essential.
Specific Duties include, but are not limited to:
Hire PT faculty to teach first-year writing courses
- Collaborate with the First-Year Seminar faculty lead in running an Orientation Week and additional workshops and sessions for FT and PT faculty to support discussions on learning outcomes, course design, and assessment of student learning, and community building for courses in the First Year Program
- Collaborate with the First-Year Seminar faculty lead and the Associate Dean in recruiting FT faculty to teach first-year seminars
- Collaborate with the First-Year Seminar faculty lead to develop community building opportunities for First Year students
- Keep abreast of national trends in orientation, transitions, and the First Year Experience
- Provide faculty development opportunities, class observations, and mentoring of first year writing faculty
- Evaluate and assess the First Year Program, in collaboration with the faculty lead of the first-year seminar
- Teach the equivalent of three courses a year including a mix of First Year Seminar and First Year Writing
- Work closely with student support staff within Lang and across The New School, including in advising and student success
- Standing member of the Academic Curriculum Committee and Chairs and Directors Council
- Advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate)
- Two or more years of experience in a first-year writing program or other college-level writing program with a record of teaching excellence
- Experience with program development and assessment, and faculty development
- Experience directing a writing program
- Experience with developing and teaching in a first year program
- Curriculum development, community-building, and administrative experience
- The ability to interact effectively with students and collaborate with faculty and staff
- Commitment to integrating issues of social justice into the curriculum
