Third Annual Conference on Acceleration in Developmental Education call for Papers.
Third Annual Conference on Acceleration in Developmental Education
The Community College Baltimore County is pleased to host the third annual Conference on Acceleration in Developmental Education in Baltimore from June 16th to June 17th. The Accelerated Learning Project, developed as an approach to mainstream basic writers that built on the important early mainstreaming efforts of a number of members of this list, has expanded to 17 colleges nationwide. After an exhaustive study by the Community College Research Center, ALP has been shown to nearly double completion of developmental students' rates in less time. Originally limited to developmental English classes, acceleration is now being used in Mathematics and Reading Developmental classes as well as ESOL.
On June 15, there is an institute intended for faculty and administrators who are interested in learning more about ALP interested in replicating ALP on their campuses, or for those schools already using it, to share information with their colleagues. Two days packed full of presentations ranging from philosophy to nuts and bolts to strategies for instituting the program are planned. In addition, we are pleased to have two excellent Plenary Speakers:
Uri Treisman (University of Texas at Austin, Director of the Charles A. Dana Center and Senior Partner at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
W. Norton Grubb (University of California, Berkeley). David Gardner Chair in Higher Education at the School of Education and author of Honored But Invisible: An Inside Look at Teaching in Community Colleges.
