Call for Applications: 2012 WPA Conference Graduate Student Travel Grants


The Writing Program Administrators Graduate Student Organization (WPA-GO) and the Council of Writing Program Administrators (CWPA) are pleased to announce five travel grants for current graduate students presenting at the 2012 WPA Conference to be held July 19-22 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Two presenters will be awarded $250.00 each, and three runners up will receive $100.00 each. Funding for these grants has been graciously provided by CWPA.
 

Eligibility:

To be eligible to apply, applicants must be current graduate students enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program at an accredited institution, and they must be accepted as presenters at the 2012 WPA Conference. Additionally, they must be members of the Council of Writing Program Administrators. (For information about how to join CWPA, go to http://wpacouncil.org/join-renew.)

Graduate students are not eligible for the same conference travel grant during consecutive years. That is, if they won a travel grant for the 2011 WPA Conference, they cannot apply for the 2012 WPA Conference travel grant. However, recipients of the 2012 CCCC travel grants may apply for a 2012 WPA Conference travel grant.
 

Purpose and Criteria for Selection:


The Council of Writing Program Administrators promotes scholarship among graduate students engaged in current WPA work or interested in future writing program administration. To foster the intellectual development of these emergent scholars, the WPA Graduate Student Organization (WPA-GO) will award grants to facilitate graduate student presenters’ travel to the 2012 WPA Conference.

Winning submissions will be selected based upon the quality of the conference proposals and the students’ articulation of their goals for contributing to WPA work in the cover letter (see Application Materials and Procedures below).
Priority will be given to graduate students who are not receiving any other funding for the conference. Priority will also be given to applicants who have not received previous WPA-GO travel grants.

Selection Committee:

Grant applications will be evaluated by members of the Travel Grants Subcommittee of the WPA Graduate Committee. This subcommittee may include members of the Graduate Committee and other members of WPA-GO who volunteer to serve.
 

Application Deadline and Timeline:

Travel grant applications are due by Friday, June 15. Winners will be notified by the end of June, and they will receive a check and a certificate of recognition during the conference lunch meal on Saturday, July 21.
 

Application Materials and Procedures--Travel Grant Applications should include the following:
 

1.) The attached Application Form saved as a PDF file named “Application_Form_2012_WPA_Travel_ Grant_Firstname_Lastname.” The form should be filled out completely with the requested information. Applicants who do not include all information will not be considered. Please do not include identifying information on any materials other than this Application Form.
 

2.) A single PDF file named “Application_2012_WPA_Travel_Grant” that includes the following two parts:


a) A one-page Cover Letter articulating the applicant’s current interests and future goals related to WPA work as well as explaining how the applicant’s presentation at the WPA Conference will contribute to these interests and goals and to the field. Please do not include any identifying information.


b.) The applicant’s 2012 WPA Proposal as submitted for acceptance. If applicants are participating on a panel, they should indicate which speaker they are (e.g., Speaker #1), and all other panelists’ names should be removed from the conference proposal. Please do not include any identifying information.
