The Council of Writing Program Administrators is pleased to announce the call for submissions for its award recognizing outstanding scholarship by graduate students writing on issues in writing program administration.
Purpose and Criteria for Selection: The Council of Writing Program Administrators encourages graduate research and scholarship in WPA studies. In recognition of the achievements by students of writing program administration, the Award for Graduate Writing in WPA Studies distinguishes outstanding graduate work based on its innovation, scholarship, relevance, appropriate description and implementation of research methods (when applicable), and clarity of writing. The committee will consider a variety of polished graduate-level projects that examine major trends and issues in writing program administration.
Eligibility: Submissions should be authored or coauthored by students currently enrolled in graduate classes or graduate programs. Work should have been completed between Sept. 1, 2014 and Sept. 1, 2015.
Submissions: Submissions should be unpublished manuscripts of 5,000–8,000 words or an equivalent multi-media and/or web-based project. These projects could include but are not limited to historical/archival studies of WPA-related issues, writing program assessment, faculty development, classroom ethnography, or composition curriculum analysis. The committee will consider seminar papers, websites, multi-media projects, dissertation chapters, collaborative work, and theses. Theses and dissertation chapters should be appropriately modified and contextualized so that they stand alone as cohesive texts. In all cases, submissions should demonstrate exemplary scholarship; reflect the theory, praxis, and values of writing program administration; and articulate how the project contributes to the ongoing investigative interests of WPA studies. To ensure anonymity, please remove all identifying information from a project prior to submission.
Accompanying their submission, candidates should address a letter to the selection committee that provides contact information and that briefly describes their specific project, articulates its significance to their local institutional context, and frames it in the scholarship and theory of writing program administration. Manuscript submissions should conform to the editorial and stylistic guidelines of the journal WPA: Writing Program Administration (http://wpacouncil.org/info-for-authors); other kinds of projects should be publication-ready as appropriate. Prize: A certificate and cash prize of $300 for the winning project. In accepting the award and prize, the author(s) agree to submit a proposal for a presentation based on the project for inclusion in the program of the WPA Summer Conference in the year following receipt of the award.
Selection Committee: Submissions will be judged in a blind review by a selection committee, composed of CWPA members (board and non-board).
Application Deadline and Timeline: Applicants must submit materials via email to Dr. Nicholas Behm (firstname.lastname@example.org) by October 15, 2015. Entries will be reviewed and a winner selected by December 31, 2015, and the winner will be notified as soon as possible thereafter. The winner of the award will be publicly recognized at the annual WPA Breakfast at the 2016 CCCC.
