Publications of Interest to WPAs

I include here published works but also some films that are "self-published," and others that will soon appear in online publications. I include even the unpublished films because I want to participate in discussions regarding where Composition is going with regard to New Media and multimodal text production.

films

_bones_. film wants to capture and project my experience of several CCCC's 2006 moments that seemed to be "about" multimodality (a kind of "zeitgeist" film). upcoming in _Kairos_.

_metro_. short, "cellphone movie" shot in the Washington D.C. metro station and the Hirschorn museum during MLA, 2006 (in a seemingly post-apocalyptic tourist-free New Year's Day). self-published at my blog (http://blkyburz.blogspot.com) as "evidence" for the ease with which we can work with our students to produce multimodal texts -- films -- with inexpensive and available technology.

_proposition 1984_. short documentary film that tells the story -- through interviews with key "characters" and classroom footage -- of the 2004 NCTE-sponsored "1984 + 20 Project," an international reading of George Orwell's novel, _1984_. 21 minutes. screened at CCCC, NCTE, MLA, RSA, and elsewhere.

_remove to dispense_. short, experimental film in filmwriting/film-rhetoric, inspired by a found object from a trip to the MoMA during CCCC's 2007 (read more about the film at http://blkyburz.wordpress.com). submitted as a "manifesto" for _Kairos_ in support of multimodal composition.

upcoming & under review

"'Totally, Tenderly, Tragically': Godard's _Contempt_ and the Composition that Could Have Been" For _Composition Studies_ Special Issue on CCC's 2007 session entitled "The Origins of Modern Composition, Part I.” Invited to submit (but will undergo review).

Breaking the Mold?

I got demoted from my first WPA position because I secured $15,000.00 from our institution's VPAA so that we could help our adjuncts join NCTE/CCCCs and attend the C's when it was in Denver (which was nearby and would thus not cost us much). Little did I know that the VPAA took the $ from our Dean, who had earlier rejected my request. Clearly, the Dean was behind the demotion, but I am still proud of my "breaking the mold" move, and at least one of the adjuncts who joined and attended the C's is now a Lecturer in our department (having been recognized for her ongoing professionalization).

In another scene . . . working in film compels me to call upon my most creative energies. I am *sometimes* successful in parlaying these skills from film to my WPA work. sometimes ;)

Reassigned Time for WPA Work

Normal teaching load is 4/4/. WPCs (coordinators, of which there are 4) have a 3/3 (unless other reassigned time is granted for research or service projects) and receive a 9 month salary with an additional (small) stipend.
