I am interested in labor issues in writing programs, but my "publication" on that topic is limited to two presentations using Lyotard's differend as a framing device for discussion of a WPA's foiled attempts to persuade administration of the need to pay contingent faculty a living wage.
I published an article on plagiarism and the Internet: Kitalong, Karla Saari (1998). A web of symbolic violence. Computers & Composition, Vol. 15, 253-263.
My primary research and teaching interests are situated at the intersections of visual rhetoric and usability. My recent work, funded by both the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, is in formative evaluation and user-centered design of mixed reality simulations, humanities learning games, and immersive databases.
After spending 2 years as Director of Writing Programs at the University of Central Florida, I gratefully retreat to "generic" faculty ranks at Michigan Tech. I expect to resume WPA work in 2009.
