Samford University is renewing its search for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor to direct its Communication Arts program.
Communications Arts 101 and 102 is the integrated writing and speaking sequence that all freshmen take as part of the Core Curriculum, now in its twelfth year. The program has received national attention for its innovative design in composition and rhetoric. Course enrollments are limited to 16-18 students per class so that faculty may use a workshop approach that includes peer editing and discussion. Samford University recently learned of its ranking at #27 nationally, just behind Rice University and ahead of University of California at Berkeley, by the Council for College Affordability and Productivity, as reported by Forbes Magazine. The ranking was based on factors such as student satisfaction and success as measured by national awards and entrance into competitive graduate programs. With a beautiful Georgian-Colonial campus located just south of Birmingham, Alabama in an area known for nationally-ranked public schools, Samford provides a strong liberal arts education to students enrolled in the Howard College of Arts and Sciences and the five professional schools that include undergraduates. Over 700 entering freshmen each fall help make up the student body of almost 4,500.
The Director of Communication Arts will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Communication Arts program and its long term strategic planning. Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Director will serve as the administrative head of the program and be supported by the work of the Core Fellows (full-time instructors in the Core) and the full-time and adjunct faculty who teach Communication Arts. The Director will collaborate with faculty from the English, Communication Studies, and Journalism departments, create effective assessment measures for the program, and ensure its visibility and effectiveness across campus and beyond.
A Ph.D. in composition studies, rhetoric, speech communication, writing pedagogy or related fields, and experience in administration preferred. Applicants should have a research agenda in writing pedagogy, composition studies, scholarship of teaching and learning, or related field. Review of applications will begin December 15, 2009, and continue until the position is filled.
