Director of the Professional Writing Program
Department of English
College of Humanities and Social Science (CHASS)
North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC)
The English Department at North Carolina State University is seeking applicants for a position as an Associate Professor of Technical Communication and Director of the Professional Writing Program; applicants at the advanced assistant professor level may also be considered. We seek a colleague with expertise in professional communication pedagogy, online writing instruction, workplace communication, and/or publications management.
The successful candidate will assume the duties of the Director of the Professional Writing Program (http://english.chass.ncsu.edu/undergraduate/prof_writing/), a university-wide service program for juniors and seniors in a variety of technical, scientific, and management-oriented fields. The Director oversees approximately 12 non-tenure-track faculty members and TAs who teach approximately 40 sections per semester in technical communication, business communication, and scientific communication. The Director of Professional Writing also administers the Professional Writing Certificate Program (http://english.chass.ncsu.edu/undergraduate/pwcertificate/). In addition to these duties, the successful candidate will become a contributing member of the MS program in Technical and Scientific Communication (TSC) (http://english.chass.ncsu.edu/graduate/ms/) and, ideally, the interdisciplinary PhD program in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media (CRDM) (http://crdm.chass.ncsu.edu) (shared with the NC State Department of Communication). The teaching load for this position will be 3 courses per year, presuming a continuing record of research and service.
Our goal is to hire a colleague who will help undergraduate and masters students in the MS/TSC program become productive, technologically savvy, critically engaged, and ethically sensitive participants in commerce, industry, governmental, non-governmental, and entrepreneurial organizations. This colleague may also work with CRDM doctoral students in research areas such as workplace communication, information management, computer-supported cooperative work, and online communication systems.
Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in Technical Communication or related field, with knowledge or research interests related to writing program administration, professional communication pedagogy, and workplace communication. Experience in program administration or industry is preferred. Competitive candidates will have a research record commensurate with an appointment at the associate rank with tenure or at the advanced assistant level, where tenure appears likely. At NC State, the standards for tenure are 5-6 peer-reviewed articles or a book.
